Review: Kiss & Belle Deluxe Lipsurgence Lip Set

Hi everyone! Today I have a review on the Tarte Kiss & Belle Lipsurgence Lip Set – one of several limited edition sets launched in the Tarte Holiday 2014 Collection. It seems like every year Tarte has a set of mini Lipsurgence! I missed out on last year’s so when I saw this set with 6 mini size Lipsurgences and 2 lip glosses looking so cute with their teeny tiny size and pretty gold and purple holiday design, I had to bring it home! Let’s take a look!

I think this set comes with a great variety; there are several different finishes and textures, as well as a good selection across the color spectrum. There are 2 LipSurgence Matte Lip Tints – Eternal (pinky nude) and Fancy (plum berry), 4 LipSurgence Lip Tints – Dreamy (cool raspberry), Alluring (mauve), Innocent (warm nude) & Dainty (pink), as well as 2 LipSurgence Lip Gloss – Kiss (light pink) and Belle (raspberry). All of these are new colours and not part of the permanent line.

According to Tarte’s website, these are “powered by” vitamin C, vitamin E, peppermint oil (which is a natural fragrance that cools and soothes inflamed or irritated lips) as well as jojoba seed oil (which is a natural soothing extract that leaves lips soft, supple and smooth). They’re formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulfate and gluten.

Top Row: Eternal, Fancy
Bottom Row: Dainty, Innocent, Alluring, Dreamy

The Mattes
These are 0.06oz in size, and have a turn up chubby-stick design that doesn’t require a sharpener. These have a pretty strong cool minty flavour and fragrance; something that I don’t personally like. The texture is very light and thin but not very smooth nor creamy so they can tug a little on the lips as you apply; I would say the mattes have very good pigmentation, true to tube colour without feeling heavy at all and doesn’t feather. In terms of staying power, I think it’s average but the highest out of the 3 types in this set – up to 3 to 4 hours. I find these slightly drying on me.

The Tints
These are 0.06oz in size, and have a turn up chubby-stick design. These have a slightly thicker and creamier texture than the mattes, and applies much smoother; they feel like tinted lip balms and are a lot more moisturising than the mattes, really comfortable on and very lightweight. While the tints also have a cool minty fragrance, I find the cooling effect and scent milder than the mattes. In terms of pigmentation, it’s not very consistent – the lighter shades are much sheerer, while some of the darker ones can have full colour just like a lipstick! The lasting power is low on these; up to 2 hours for me.

The Glosses
These are 0.05oz in size, and comes with a regular doe foot applicator. These have a sweet, vanilla-type scent. These feels very smooth, with a little tackiness but not annoyingly so. The texture is slightly thick, and I find these very comfortable, and not drying at all. The pigmentation is quite different between the two glosses – Kiss is quite sheer but has a lot of sparkle, while Belle is creamier with nearly full on colour. For a gloss, I find that these have pretty good staying power – about 2hours.

Clockwise from Top Left: Eternal, Dreamy, Belle, Kiss

I like how there’s a good variety of colour – brights, nudes, pinks, berries, corals, with a good selection of textures. I don’t have a massive Tarte collection, so I think this is a great set to try out Tarte’s lip offerings; these are small enough as a ‘taster’ but still generously sized. Individually, I like the glosses and the lip tints more than the matte lip tints, but I don’t hate the matte lip tints either. If you’re looking for holiday gifts, I think this is a great set either to gift as a set or to break it up as stocking stuffers. Or you can be like me and keep it all for yourself.

What do you think of this set? Have you bought it or are you planning to grab it?

Rating: 4/5 as a set
